In Celtic cosmology, the universe came forth from two scarlet serpent eggs whiwh were hidden among the branches of the willow. Both the words "Witchcraft" and "Wicca" have their root in the word "willow". It was known as the "tree of enchantment" and as "Witches' aspirin", probably because the bark contains salicin. The willow was sacred to the moon and symbolizes the Female. A willow goddess is Cerridwen, the great pre-Christian lunar goddess in het aspect of wise old woman. Or, if you like, of witch. Sure enough, Cerridwen owns the archetypal witches' cauldron, in which strange ingredients are brewing and simmering for a year and a day. When tasting this forbidden brew, one may acquire instant wisdom. One may also acquire instant wrath of the goddess. An associated animal is the hare. It is symbolic of intuition, hidden teachings and adaptation. Its movements were used for divination, and it is said that Boudica used this quality before her final battle with the Romans. As for the Easter bunny: the hare is also associated with fertility, and Eostre, the Anglo-Saxon goddess of Spring and Dawn, once saved an almost frozen bird by changing it into a hare. Unfortunately for the animal, the transformation was not as it should have been (who is perfect?) and it still had to lay eggs… The Ogham sign attributed to this month is Saille. |
