A Tree Calendar

January 21th - February 17th is the month of the Rowan tree.

Traditionally, the Rowan tree is seen as a tree of protection against evil influences. It is also a guardian of the gateway to the Spirit world. In Irish legend, the first human woman was also created from a Rowan tree.

Brigid, or Brigit, or Brighid, or Bride, is the Rowan deity. She is the daughter of the Dagda, she is the Keeper of the Flame, she is also the Celtic goddess of fire, fertility, poetry, and a lot of other things. Her festival is the spring festival of Imbolc, hence she can be seen as the maiden aspect of the Triple Goddess.

The animal associated with this month is the green dragon, guardian of the secrets of the Earth, but also of the subconscious. A dragon centre was Kildare, sacred site of the goddess Brigid. Originally, dragons were benevolent beings. Later on, they were demonized as symbols of pagan culture.

The Ogham sign attributed to this month is Luis.
