A Tree Calendar

June 10th - July 7th is the month of the oak.

The oak is considered king of the forest, and stands for virility, strength and solidity.
It is a doorway between the dark half of the year and the light half, symbolised by the battle of the Oak King, lord of the waning year, with the Holly King, lord of the waxing year.

The Dagda is an oak deity. He is a fearful warrior, a master of magic and the leader of the Tuatha Dé Danann, a divine race which ruled Ireland before the arrival of the Celts.
Among his possessions are a cauldron that supplies unlimited food, and an enormous club with which he could kill men but also bring men to life.
He is famous for protecting the crops and for his unfulfillable appetite - both culinary and sexual.

One of many animals associated with this month is the white horse.
Horses are normally rather associated with goddesses (e.g. Epona, Rhiannon), but they are also solar creatures. During the above mentioned battle of Waxing and Waning Year, the white horse of the oak becomes the unicorn of the holly.

The Ogham sign attributed to this month is Duir.
