A Tree Calendar

May 13th - June 9th is the month of the hawthorn.

As the hawthorn has sharp thorns, it is seen as a tree of psychic protection. Hence hawthorn fences around houses and fields. Hawthorn blooms in may, and the scented white flowers can be seen as a symbol for the renewal of life in nature.

The mythological figure for this month is Olwyn. Her father is hawthorn in the guise of the giant Yspaddaden.
Olwyn means in Welsh "white footprint" and wherever she trod, white trefoils sprung.
She represents the May Queen, the partner of the new god who takes the place of the old one, who is to be sacrificed.
Her suitor was Culhwch. He undertook the journey to find Olwyn when she was hidden by her father, who knew that a marriage between Culhwch and his daughter inevitably would mean his end.

Also associated with this month is the owl. It was said that witches could transform into owls to suck babies' blood.
For the Romans, owls predicted death and disaster.
But for the Celts - and for a lot of other people - the owl was a bird of wisdom and insight. Moreover, it was considered a guide to and through the Underworld.

The Ogham sign attributed to this month is Uath.
