A Tree Calendar

The Ash tree is the cosmic World Tree that appears in Nordic mythology as Yggdrasil, the tree from whose branches Odin hung upside down to gain wisdom. For the Celts, the Ash was a sacred tree, thought to be enchanted and offering protection against snakes, illness and death by drowning. Druids made their wands and spears out of the wood of the Ash tree, and witches used it for their brooms. On a more cosmic level, the Ash symbolised the connection between the different levels of our existence. Gwydion is the Ash deity. He is the Master of Illusion, very wise, very magical. After being captured during one of his raids into the Underworld, and being imprisoned in a place that was reputed to make the captive either mad or inspired after a single night, Gwydion was also the Bard of the Gods. During some other invasions of the Underworld, Gwydion brought to mankind the dog, the deer, the lapwing and - last but not least - the pig. An animal associated with this month is the adder. As ostracised an animal as can be, after the story of how the Snake tried to lure humankind into using its brain, tha adder has always been a symbol of wisdom, and, because it sheds its skin, of reincarnation and transformation. The Ogham sign for this month is Nion. |
